Additional Summer Cohort Work: Part II
iImages
Group Members: Jeff Pierce, Abigail Kuhn, Melissa Bouza, Yalonda Combs While discussing aesthetics and creativity in understanding, we explored the idea of uncovering ideas in place of covering them. This might include metaphors, stories, and/or images. For this assignment, each group was asked to take a series of photos that would capture a "big idea" in a particular discipline as a way to uncover something. We took our photos around the campus of MSU, including the museum, Beaumont Tower, and the botanical gardens. Use the arrows or the play button to click through the photos. |

CrossFire - Comparing Generation Like and It's Complicated
Group Members: Abigail Kuhn, Kate McCallum, Kristen Welton As part of our readings, we watched PBS Frontline's program "Generation Like", which...... We also read portions of Danah Boyd's book It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens. During class we joined the Year 1 students for a crossfire activity where we looked at major ideas present in these two works that contrasted each other at times. Our group looked at the idea of a digital native. While the term is quite prevalent in our society, some would argue that perhaps the term is not accurate. We had one hour to create a one minute video that shows the tension between the ideas in these two readings. |
Repurposing Web 2.0 Technologies
Some technologies available are made with educators in mind. Other times we must look at what is available and determine how it could be repurposed to fit our needs in education. One day we explored web 2.0 technologies with this in mind. I spent some time on Capzles and evaluated it for its possibilities in the classroom. Capzles is an online multimedia timeline tool that seems that it could be useful in the classroom both for student creation and in exploring capzles that already exist. |
Storify
Group Members: Abigail Kuhn, Jeff Pierce, Yalonda Combs, and Melissa Bouza As a way to reflect on each day, our groups used Storify to document what we did throughout the day. This allowed us to bring together the events of the day in one location and to recap our learning for future use. Storify 1 - Monday, June 23 Storify 2 - Monday, June 30 |
Tensions in Leadership
The idea behind this assignment was to visually represent the tensions that we feel as educational leaders. We each took a series of photos and edited them to create one photo that would show these tensions. Here you see me taking a picture of two versions of myself. One version looks like the "normal" me, but the other shows a hidden identity in the form of Batman. Sometimes as educational leaders we are expected to be superheroes, and sometimes our superhero identity is hidden. The third version of me, the one taking the picture, represents something that I enjoy doing in my free time. Balancing these three can sometimes cause tension. |
